What I mean by "old school" is maps that are more geared towards your strafe skill rather than "combo's." For instance, if you look at a map like kz_carbon (or any archon map really) it's like 80% just hard jumps. It has bhops, for sure, but they're very heavily outweighed by just standard strafe jumps. I'm not saying these maps don't exist anymore, but I've definitely noticed some kind of downturn in them. It feels to me like most modern t5 - t7 maps are just some kind of dick measuring contest for how many singlebhops you can have in a row.
Not saying these maps are bad, in fact some are really really good, but they just aren't my style. Like for instance I was playing the newly released kz_armored_core today, and I'm not trying to diss the mapper by any means (in fact it's a pretty good map) but I just audibly sighed when it turned from "hard jumps" to the standard "hard sections" you see in pretty much every t5+ map these days. There's sections of like 2 timed blocks, a timed ladder, a surf, a singlebhop, 2 "double-bhops" before reaching the next platform. Personally I'd just rather be tested by my strafe skill rather than how many single bhops I can hit in a row before my ping gives out.
I think that's mainly why I made kz_superstructure, because although it has some bhops and ladders and surfs here and there, the majority of it is just tier 3 jumps, over and over. I know this can be quite boring for some people but I just missed the gameplay that seems absent in so many of these new maps, even as low as tier 4.
I of course understand that there are people out there who genuinely enjoy these maps, but is there anybody else who misses hard maps like archon's maps, communityjump, etc. where it's like 80% standard kz?
